Construction

The Monday Sweater is actually very easy to make. It’s a good crochet pattern for easy-level crocheters, maybe even advanced beginners.

To make this chunky crochet sweater you start by crocheting the two body panels. When you’re done with the body you sew the shoulders together on the wrong side, turn your work inside out, and crochet the side together on the right side. It creates a gorgeous effect to see the crochet stitches on the outside of your sweater.

Then you crochet the sleeves directly onto the body of your sweater. Doing this means a minimum of sewing/crocheting things together. Also, you now have a chance to try out your crochet sweater and see how you’re doing 🥰

chunky crochet sweater pattern free

When you’re done with the sleeves you continue crocheting the ribbing at the neckline, the wrist, and the bottom of your lovely chunky crochet sweater.

You can choose to make your sweater in all the colors you want. The crochet pattern suggests choosing four colors. By doing so you get a lovely and colorful effect and you can really see the details. How to work with four different colors is described in the instructions below.

You can easily adjust the length of the sweater if you like the body of your Monday Sweater shorter or longer. The same applies to the sleeves. Just follow the instructions 😀

To complete your sweater follow the instructions for all sizes – find them just below👇

Instructions for all sizes

Assembly

Before you assemble your new chunky crochet sweater, lay the two body panels on top of each other with right sides together on a flat surface. Make sure that the stripes and colors match on the front and back panels.

Shoulders

Crochet (sc) or sew the shoulders together using whip stitch or mattress stitch, 15 (18) sts across, using the tails you left on the shoulders.

Turn your work inside out. You’ll be working on the right side from now on

Sides

Use hook 9 mm. Use color D.

Start from the bottom and work towards the shoulder, dividing approx. 24 (28) sc on 22 (26) rows. The part you do not crochet together creates the armhole. It will measure approx. 6 1/3 (7 1/2) inches / 16 (19) cm.

When you crochet the sides together on the right side of your sweater you get this pretty detail, as you see here:

chunky crochet sweater

Now decide which panel you want to be your front and back. Mark the front with a stitch marker.

Ribbing at neckline

Use hook 8 mm. Work on the right side. Use color D. Add yarn where ever you find suitable on the back panel. Ch 8.

Row 1: Start in 2nd ch from the hook, 7 sc, 2 sc along the neckline, turn
Row 2: Skip 2 sc, 7 sc blo, ch 1, turn
Row 3: 7 sc blo, 2 sc along neckline, turn

Repeat row 2 and 3 all the way around the neckline.

When you reach the sides of the neckline, by the shoulders, crochet 2 st in the hdc row. You end with making row 2.

Continue like this:
7 sc towards the edge of the body, 1 sc in the st you attached the first ch 8, ch 1, turn.

Crochet the ribbing together with 7 sc in both loops.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Ribbing at wrist

Use hook 8 mm. Work on the right side. Use color A. Add yarn in last st of last rnd on the sleeves. Ch 7.

Row 1: Start in 2nd from hook, 6 sc, 2 sc along the wrist, turn
Row 2: Skip 2 sc, 6 sc blo, ch 1, turn
Row 3: 6 sc blo, 2 sc along the wrist, ch 1, turn

Repeat from row 2 and 3 all the way around the sleeve. You end with making row 2.

Continue like this:
6 sc in blo towards the wrist, 1 sc in the remaining st along the wrist, turn.

Crochet ribbing together with 6 sc in both loops.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Ribbing at bottom

Use hook 8 mm. Work on the right side. Use color A. Add yarn where ever you find suitable. Ch 9.

Row 1: Start in 2nd from hook, 8 sc, 2 sc along the bottom, turn
Row 2: Skip 2 sc, 8 sc blo, ch 1, turn
Row 3: 8 sc blo, 2 sc along bottom, turn

Repeat row 2 and 3 all the way around the bottom. You end with making row 2.

Continue like this:
8 sc towards the edge of the body, 1 sc in the st where you attached the first ch 9, ch 1, turn.

Crochet the ribbing together with 8 sc in both loops.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
