With sunshine comes the need for a Crochet Summer Top

The Star Cluster Tee is super versatile and will be a staple piece in your warm weather crochet wardrobe! It’s made from Hobbii Rainbow Bamboo which is super soft and has a bit of a shine to it. This bamboo-cotton blend gives the top a beautiful drape and makes your stitches look nice and even.

This easy crochet top can be worn with practically anything; shorts, skirts, dresses, and jeans. You name it. I’ve even used it as a beach cover-up because it’s so light and airy.

The crochet top pattern is designed to be easy, gorgeous, and very wearable. The construction is simple (two panels + quick sleeves), while the stitch pattern adds that “finished” look that makes the top feel like real clothing — not just another crochet project.

Why You’ll Love This crochet top pattern:
  • Beginner-friendly: Basic stitches, repeating rows = minimal brain work 😉
  • Simple construction: Two panels, seam together, sleeves crocheted on, no complicated shaping
  • Summer-ready yarn: Light and breathable that creates fabric with airflow
  • Easy adjustments: Adjust body and sleeves as preferred
This easy crochet top is one of those must-haves in your wardrobe

The inspiration for the Star Cluster Tee

The goal behind this design is simple: a modern crochet top that feels light, looks amazing, and is easy to style.

The star texture and open stitch work gives the top a delicate look without turning it into a complicated lace project. It stays relaxed, wearable, and flattering – with enough structure to look like a real wardrobe piece and not just some homemade project.

Construction

The Star Cluster Tee has a cute boxy fit, that flatters most body shapes and is crocheted in a straightforward, beginner-friendly way:

Start by crocheting the two body panels: a front and a back panel with fitted shoulders parts. When you’re done with the body panels, you crochet the shoulders and sides together on the wrong side and turn your work inside out.

Then you crochet the sleeves directly onto the tee, which means a minimum of assembling.

When you’re done with the sleeves you continue crocheting the ribbing at the neckline and the bottom of your new, cute crochet top. Both the look of the sleeves and the boatneck contribute to the feminine look.

You can choose to make your crochet top in all the colors you want. The crochet pattern suggests choosing one color, but feel free to add stripes if you feel like it.

Personal adjustments

Small changes make a big difference when you crochet a summer top. The pattern includes guidance for:

  • Sleeve length: Add or subtract rows to match your preferences (like shown in the pictures above)
  • Length: keep it classic, add a little extra for more coverage or subtract rows to make a crop top

Gauge

(This is an expression of how tight your work is)

4” / 10 cm square = 16 stitches wide x 9 rows tall in dc using a hook size 3,5 mm

4” / 10 cm square = 20 stitches wide x 15 rows tall in sc blo using a hook size 3,5 mm (used for ribbings)

Always make a test before you begin. If the gauge does not match the specified crochet hook, try changing to a larger or smaller one so that you find the hook with which you can achieve the specified gauge.

Pattern notes

First, follow the specific instructions for your chosen size. When noted follow the instructions that apply to all sizes later in the instructions.

Stitch counts for the different sizes are written in the order:

S/M (L/XL)

E.g. for the sleeve:
52 (60)

Be aware not to make the foundation chains too tight nor too loose since they will define the rest of your work.

Note that the ch 3 in the beginning of each row on the body panels count as a dc.

Note for the sleeves: Crochet along the side of the dc rows of the body panels to create the sleeves. Crochet 2 sc in each dc row. Work in rnds and do not turn.

Always read the pattern thoroughly. You will find an explanation of all abbreviations below, both US and UK terms. This crochet pattern uses US terms.

Instructions for all sizes

Assembly

Lay the two body panels on a flat surface with right sides together. Make sure that the rows match on the front and back panels.

Nowcrochet each of the shoulders together with sc, 25 (33) sts across using the tails you left on the shoulders. Use hook 3,5 mm.

Now sew the sides together, from the bottom towards the shoulder, using whip stitch. Sew 26 rows together. The part you do not sew together creates the armhole. It will measure approx. 6 1/2 (7)“ / 16 (18) cm. Turn the work inside out.

From now on you’ll be working on the right side.

Continue with the ribbing at the neck hole.

Neckline ribbing

Use hook 3,5 mm. Work on the right side. Add yarn approx. in the middle of the back panel.

Ch 6.

Row 1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, 5 sc, 2 sc along the neck hole, turn.

Row 2: Skip 2 sc, 5 sc blo, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: 5 sc blo, 2 sc along neck hole, turn.

Repeat row 2 and 3 all the way around the neck hole.

When you reach the sides of the neck hole, by the shoulders, crochet 2 sts in each dc row. You end with making row 3.

Crochet ribbing together with 5 sc in both loops.

Fasten off.

Sleeves

Use hook 3,5 mm. Work on the right side. Work in rnds.

Add the yarn under the arm. Do not make rnd 1 too tight.

Rnd 1: 2 sc in each dc row across the armhole to the beginning of the rnd [ 52 (60) ]

Rnd 2-15: Sc in each st across [ 52 (60) ]

Only for size L/XL:

Rnd 16-17: Sc in each st across [ 60 ]

If you wish for the sleeves to be longer, add more rnds.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Repeat with second sleeve.

Ribbing at bottom

Use hook 3,5 mm. Work on the right side.Add yarn in the first st on left side of the front panel.

Ch 6.

Row 1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, 5 sc, 2 sc along the bottom, turn.

Row 2: Skip 2 sc, 5 sc blo, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: 5 sc blo, 2 sc along bottom, turn.

  1. I am working on line 5 and not understanding the changes. Is there a video for this pattern?

    1. Hi Clarissia,

I’ll try to explain it. Since I don’t know what size you’re making I’ll explaoin row 5 for size s/m 🙂 First you make 3 chains, then you dc in next 8 st. Then you chain 1 + skip 1 and then you make dc in the next 7 sts – this you repeat 9 times more and then dc in the last 2 st.

I hope this makes sense. Please let me know how it goes.

      Best,
      Sharlene
